The Syro Malabar Catholic Church has its headquarters at Ernakulam.
The Church is an Apostolic Church. It has its root to the coming of St.Thomas in Kodungallor in AD. 52.
The Church is divided into Arch Dioceases and Dioceases.
The Arch Dioceases are:
1.Changanacheri
2.Ernakulam
3.Thrissur
According to the tradition, it is believed that Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, came to India at Kodungalloor in 52 AD. He founded seven Christian communities at Palayur, Cranganore, Kokkamangalam, Kottakavu (Parur), Quilon, Niranam, and Chayal.
The Syro Malabar Church is one of the 22 sui iuris Oriental churches in Catholic Communion with its own particular characteristics expressed in worship, spirituality, theology and disciplinary laws.
The religious practices of Syro Malabar Church has its origin to the practices those were existing in Kerala before the entry of Europeans in 15th century. In that time, the rites had a Syrian orientation. Today, though the Syrian Catholics follow the religious practices of Roman Catholics world over, the rites followed are oriented to Syrian rites. The church has got special previleage in shaping their religious practices, but at the same time has conformed to the guidlines of Vatican.
Alphonsa, who was a nun belonging to this church and who died in year xxxx, was xxxx as the first lone woman saint of India in year xxxx.
